To succeed in this industry, you need to be able to understand consumer’s spending habits and trends in the marketplace. The successful Marketer will track their competitor’s presence and maximise on all advertising and PR opportunities. There is a saying that any publicity is good publicity. The job of a Marketer is totake responsibility for implementing and owning campaigns targeting existing customers, and new business prospects. Launching products and being able to project manage will help to differentiate you from other Marketers so you need to be able to communicate effectively and be organised. Negotiation is a vital part of the role as you will be working with organisations, either in your own business network, or customers worldwide.

Event organising and sponsorship can be an important aspect of the Marketer’s job, some organisations have entire departments focusing on these tasks. In addition to it being a revenue generator, it can be critical to a new product launch.

Typically, you would need to have knowledge of how to use the social media platforms, as mentioned before, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Stumble Upon, Digg, Delicious, MySpace, Bebo, YouTube etc. Social Media activity should be included in any marketing plan to ensure you are communicating with the correct demographics and target audience. This should be done in addition to other marketing streams.

If you wish to start working in this industry, but have no experience, we suggest that you do some voluntary work. Not ideal, as it may involve working for no salary, but if the goal is to secure work in this sector, then it can be a worthwhile task. Look at your Top 10 companies you would like to work for, phone and speak to the Marketing Director / Manager and offer your services. Set your boundaries, i.e. you will offer your services free of charge for XYZ days, weeks, months etc. simply to gain experience. There needs to be something in it for you, and also the organisation.

Alternatively, if you are registered with a recruitment agency, speak to your Consultant and ask them to get you work in a marketing department. Be flexible and start networking when you are working. If you are persistent and very clear about your objectives and goals, you will succeed. The most important thing is to have the correct attitude.
