Graduation means different things to different individuals, for some it’s about securing their dream job, for others it can be to travel overseas to start their life, in their chosen profession. However, some people are still weighing up their options, 6 months after graduating.
The average salary of a Graduate is £20,827.27 with 56% of them working in the UK. Based on research 90% of Graduates stay in Scotland, the figure varies depending on where they came from before going to a Scottish university.
“Graduates’ prospects vary according to what subjects they have studied, where they want to work and what they want to do. Having said that, in recent years more than 60% of first degree graduates [that is those with an undergraduate degree rather than a postgraduate qualification] are in employment when a survey is done six months after graduation. Some have jobs lined up before they graduate, while others leave their serious job search till after graduation. Around 25 to 30% go on to further study, while 3 to 4% in a typical year take time out to travel or pursue other interests before embarking on career related plans.
Unemployment fluctuates depending on the state of the labour market. In a good year it can be around 4 to 5%, while in more difficult times it can rise to 8 or 9%, but for most graduates that is a temporary state of affairs.” Source: http://www.scottishdegrees.com Scotland has a regional unemployment rate of 8.5% which is high compared to the rest of the U.K.

Salaries for graduate jobs seem to start at £17k through to £30k. This is for full-time permanent employment opportunities.
It is advisable for Graduates to write / email prospective employers months before finishing Studying, ideally you should ask to work there during the holiday season to gain work experience. It is practical, but if you Graduate and have no working experience, this will definitely hinder your employment prospects. Try to keep work experience relevant so if you wish to be a Teacher, get a CRB check organised (this can take up to 8 weeks), and approach the local schools in your area to offer your skills.
In order to secure a job, especially in these tough economic times, be focused and network yourself i.e. get onto LinkedIn and tell people that you have Graduated and are ready to discuss your options. Opportunities need to be sought after, and with a high number of Graduates each year, you need to do something to differentiate yourself.
